Google Chrome on OSX
Here is how to install Google’s new browser Chrome on OSX.
Google Chrome is a Windows application. So its not that easy to get it working on OSX. But if you want to test it as bad as me, its worth the work.
So, what do you need? Well OSX 10.5 and 1-2 hours of free time.
First you need the offline installer of Google Chrome:
http://gpdl.google.com/chrome/install/149.27/chrome_installer.exe
You will need to install the MacPorts-Package for OSX 10.5:
http://www.macports.org/install.php
You also need to be the admin (which usually means that you know your username and password)
Download the Chrome installer to any folder. Then open a terminal in the same folder.
Now the fun begins. Type in the following commands into the terminal:
export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH (press enter)
sudo port install wine-devel (press enter)
sudo port install winetricks (press enter)
sh winetricks riched20 riched30 (press enter)
winetricks riched20 riched30 (press enter)
especially the second command will take years to finish.
Alright this little commands are a long journey. But now you are ready start Chrome by typing:
wine chrome_installer.exe (press enter)
A Chrome window should ask you to start Google Chrome and then you will see the first time the Google Chrome browser… but this time its not usable. So you will need to get back to the terminal and do the following:
(press ctrl-c to stop Google Chrome)
wine "/Users/[yourname]/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/
[yourname]/Local Settings/Application Data/
Google/Chrome/Application/
chrome.exe" --new-http --in-process-plugins (press enter)
Alright the last command didn’t work, right?! Well the path to the “chrome.exe” depends on your username and the language of your OSX (eg. “Application Data” is in german “Anwendungsdaten”). You will need to figure this thing out yourself.
And thats it. You got the Google Chrome browser running on your OSX.
You can always run it again, by opening a terminal window and typing the following:
export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH (press enter)
wine "/Users/[yourname]/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/
[yourname]/Local Settings/Application Data/
Google/Chrome/Application/
chrome.exe" --new-http --in-process-plugins (press enter)
Of course, a terminal script for this commands is handy.
You can speed the whole thing a bit up by installing X11 2.3.0
In conclusion, I have to say this solutions works, but its very buggy. Absolutely too bad integrated to use it as your normal browser. Using Windows emulation is a much better approach if you want Chrome for your normal browsing. I tried it with VMWare Fusion, and its nice to use.
